( bathhead.jpg)
(mudhead.jpg)

The second image:
I choose the pictures named bathhead.jpg for my original image.
Firstly, I use the FILTER>STYLIZE> FIND EDGES to create the shape of the head. I use the lasso Tool to color the difference areas, such as the eyes, brick wall and bathtub surface. They are filled by the Textures/Sketch/Bas Relief. That makes the head look like go up from the mud of yellow painting oil not like in the bath tub anymore as original image. I call my abstract image is mud_head.

The first image is not an abstraction. The picture is not abstracted - we can clearly see that it is a photograph of a little girl with the eyes enhanced. An abstraction is when you change the image so much that it bears little resemblance to the original image - but has retained some elemental part of it - i.e. the lines, the light and dark spaces, the texture, the colours, etc.

Your second try is much more of an abstraction.
